We had the same reaction. When we started doing short-term medical term mission trips, we looked and looked for a book that would keep us from feeling so totally lost. We didn't find it. So we made all the mistakes, talked with others about theirs and then wrote the first book.
Time being what it is, that book went out of print and the material it contained needed to be updated. So we did. Medical Missions: Get Ready, Get Set, GO! was the first volume published in March 2009 and now this one, Your Mission: Get Ready, Get Set, GO!, has been completed. It is for any and every type of missionary, not just medical folks. Written with dry humor and attention to detail, this little book covers just about everything you will run into in your first weeks and months as a cross-cultural missionary. Most of all, the emphasis throughout the book is to keep the main thing the main thing – bringing glory to God and deepening a relationship with Him. If you or someone you know is preparing to go out on the mission field, this book is an essential read; it contains information on everything from what documents you'll need, to adapting to the culture, to how to travel & serve with your spouse or children and even what to pack! There are check-off lists you can use and the chapters are designed to stand-alone - you don't have to read the book from cover to cover to have it make sense.
If you are medical, you will want both volumes (have we got a deal for you!). If you are not, this one will suffice (but feel free to buy both anyway!) These volumes are designed to be stand-alone versions of the work, but there is material that is duplicated in both books because both groups of people needed to hear it. That duplication of material is why you will receive a substantial discount when you buy both! By changing the format from the original, we added a lot more material, made the books small enough to fit into your suit pocket and made it much cheaper, even if you buy both. It's a great deal for you, even if it isn't so great for us!
